We Are a Jubilee People’s Millions Finalist!

Thank you to all our friends and supporters for voting for us in the Jubilee People’s Millions campaign.  Unfortunately we were not successful this time.  We will continue to fundraise to develop programmes that encourage improved health and skills for young people and adults.   Our concern for the health and well being of children, young people and communities in need has been an priority for a number of years.  Our Attlee Youth & Community Centre offers a range of activities and programmes to increase access to opportunities in social, economic and physical well being.  This is important for the area in which we are based – Tower Hamlets – which has one on the highest levels of obesity in the UK, poor levels of nutritional intake and lack of regular exercise by adults, particular women.  If you live in Tower Hamlets you are likely to live up to 10 years less than other adults living in other parts of London.

We want to make a difference to young people’s health and the well being their communities through our Attlee Friends Food Project.  We will work with other groups in that make up the local community such as homeless people in contact with locally based charity Crisis, as well as with families living in local high rise and estates where they have no garden or access to allotments or food growing opportunities.  They will extend a food garden project to grow they own food and learn about healthy cooking and working with others in the community.  Young people will learn new skills in leadership, team work, food growing and healthy cooking.

Volunteers from the Crisis charity who are homeless are already helping out using their skills and time to make the project a reality.
Thank you for your support!

Clement Attlee Statue restored

We were pleased to have supported the restoration of the Clem Attlee Statue – previously located and left neglected outside Limehouse Library.  In April, Queen Mary’s College agreed to offer their site as the new home for the statue and to ensure its proper care in future.  Lord Hennessey, Patron of the Attlee Foundation, gave a stimulating and witty lecture on the life of Clement Attlee and invited Lord Mandelson to formally unveil the new statue.  Our thanks go to Queen Mary’s College and Lord Hennessy.
