Attlee Memorial Lecture 2010

On Wednesday 23rd June, The Right Honourable Frank Field MP led the Annual Attlee Memorial Lecture on the subject of ’ The Future of Social Policy - Are There Lessons From the Past?’. The event was held at the stunning headquarters of the Attlee Foundation on the edge of Spitalfields in East London.

Mr Field spoke about issues relating to individuals and communities who are experiencing disadvantage and lack of opportunities - reflecting the communities that the Attlee Foundation is aiming to support through its youth, community and social policy work.Mr Field expounded on lessons from past governments, and on Clement Attlee’s governance, values and character in addressing poverty.

He referred to the Coalition Government’s emergency Budget announced on the preceding day and opened the floor to suggestions on measuring poverty that would inform his commision on reviewing poverty and life chances.

AYCC OFSTED Report

AYCC logoIn February 2010 Ofsted inspectors reported that the AYCC offered strong provision for children and ‘a provision of exceptionally high quality’ in promoting equality and diversity, in working with parents and in it partnership work.  Chief Executive Tracey Fletcher said “This is great news for children who make use of our Centre and for parents - who can be reassured about the quality of services we provide and that we engage them and other partners in meeting the needs of their children”.AYCC 2010 OFSTED Report

Rowing World Champion inspires London youngsters

Sarah’s Rowing Challenge Sarah Winckless, rowing Bronze Medallist in the 2004 Athens Olympics and two times World Champion dropped into the AYCC in Tower Hamlets on 6 Feb to inspire young people in the borough to get fit and take up rowing. Over thirty children and Centre staff took part in team and individual rowing competitions with every child receiving a medal from Sarah. As well as being taught rowing and fitness techniques by a former world champion the young people were able to take part in a question and answer session and learn at first hand what it takes to become a sporting champion.This visit was the first of four Sarah will be making to the AYCC to promote free sports opportunities provided by the Thames Gateway Youth Football Project at the Attlee Centre as part of Sport England’s Sport Unlimited Programme. The programme aims to get more semi-sporty young people aged 11 to 19 years taking part in regular sporting activities. Sarah Winckless said: “It was a privilege to be invited to the Attlee Youth Centre and get involved in this project. The excitement and enthusiasm was infectious. These young people can achieve anything they set their minds to.”
